Looks like we have another app to go viral and become popular. sigh. On this edition of “What The App is This,” it’s time explain what the hell this app called “FaceApp” is because I have no fucking clue and you probably don’t either. So let’s find out what the hell this app is that is apparently ruining lives.
In case you don’t get the gif, that’s Shonda Rhimes on Patrick Dempsey body because Shonda will kill characters that you learn to love and want to be happy. Shonda ruin lives like Regina George. Anyways, “FaceApp” is an app that allows people to transform your face into different filters. You can make yourself smile, look old, see what you would look if you were the opposite gender, etc. Pretty much, it lets you change your face without having to pay out the butt and make an appointment to “see the dentist” aka the plastic surgeon.
That’s pretty much all the app is. All it does is let you change your face with the help of filters. There’s isn’t anything else to it….besides the fact that it’s becoming very controversial. This app is getting racist. There’s are tweets of the filter called “hot” bleaching the skin of non-caucasian people. So it’s pretty much just telling people that they aren’t “hot” unless they are white. Luckily, the filter has been removed or renamed to something stupid. “Spark” is the name. Ummm, that’s lame.
The app has also sparked questions about whether or not the app is safe for privacy. According to people who installed the app, it requires you to give permission to things besides your camera and photos. Apparently, it needs permission to access stuff like your internet/network connections, receive data, and preventing your device from sleeping. While the other things are slightly understandable, why does it need to prevent your device from sleeping? Is it watching you like your microwave? Or do they think that they are just being helpful in case you are waiting to fuck up your friends face without looking before your phone’s screen does dark? I know from person experience that if you touch the screen right away, then it will wake up to the screen without unlocking your phone. My mind was blown too by that!
So pretty much this app is adding to the culture that “FaceTuning” created, which was another app that allowed people to take out the imperfections of their face, and tried to put a spin on it to where it was comedic but misses the mark because what is featured as the filters. The filters kind of suck. The technology is amazing but it could have been used in a much better way.
Hopefully, this helps explain “FaceApp” more so you know whether or not this app is something you want. #NoJudgement if you do want it.
