You know that it’s going to be a good song when you have to use Urban Dictionary to better understand the lyrics. sigh. This is the case with the latest Katy Perry song “Bon Appetit.” I don’t know where, to begin with this song, so let us just get into it.
Now just to give you fair warning, this song is very graphic and so will be prepared. “Bon Appetit” is the second single off of her fifth album. The song is the total opposite of what we heard it “Chained to the Rhythm.” This song is extremely provocative but we’ll get into the lyrics later. It’s all done over a summer song like instrumental that makes you think it’s the 90s. The beat of the song is rather infectious and catchy. It’s really well produced. It’s definitely a song that is dance friendly.
Featured on the track is someone who isn’t Ariana Grande. Allegedly, Ariana Grande was supposed to be on this song in a duet. Turns out that it’s not her but rather the hip hop group Migos. I’m not going to discuss my thoughts on the group because they are non-existent because I wasn’t aware of their existence before this song. I would drop the mic but that would mean that this review would come prematurely, just like the teenage boys that listened to the song. Migos rap before the climax of the song and it really doesn’t add anything to song. Their rap just feels out-of-place. I really couldn’t understand them after “Sweet Potato Pie.” I’m all for rap breaks as long as they make sense, and for “Bon Appetit,” it just doesn’t go with it.
Now, it’s time to talk about the lyrics. As soon as I heard the chorus, I knew that this song is trying to be sexy. For those who are unaware, I’m sorry, the references to pies in the song are ment to represent vagina. So when Katy is singing “Got me spread like a buffet
/Bon appétit, baby/Appetite for seduction/Fresh out the oven/Melt in your mouth kind of lovin’,” this is code for “spread my legs and perform oral sex on me.” The sad part is that it’s like this the entire song. While Katy Perry is known for stuff like this, the lyrics are just too over the top. Remember when Britney Spears’ song “If U Seek Amy?” That type of double entendre is welcome and lovely because it’s not in your face. This song is in your face. And it’s not in your face in the way Katy Perry wants it to be. The overly sexual nature of the song is just too much to handle. I don’t even know how this will get any airtime on radios. Sure, there are plenty of worse lyrics on there, but it isn’t that obvious.
Overall, the beat and instrumental of the song isn’t bad but rather the best part of the song. The overly dirty lyrics is just too much and hurt the song. Migos on the song doesn’t really help add to the song but rather just feel out-of-place. The song dirty lyrics just ruin what could be a great song. Also, if anyone uses this a pick up line is successful, please let me know.
