You read that title right. The brillant minds of the Walt Disney Company, better know as Disney, is bringing back one of their beloved television shows: “The Mickey Mouse Club.”
For those that don’t know what that is, you are missing out for one, the show is pretty much variety show that featured who would end up being the megastars. They did performances, skits, you name it. The show started in the 1950s so it’s campy. The show ended in the early 90s and gave us Ryan Gosling, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and the list goes on. You see why this show is a big deal?
It was announced that the revival would air on Facebook as “Club Mickey Mouse.” While I’m all for this revival, I don’t see this one being a good one. While Facebook does have two billion users, this isn’t the way to launch a series. Launching it on both YouTube and Facebook would be a much better idea, one I hope they consider and do. While YouTube is having issues with advertisers at the moment, it’s still gets way more views and eyes on the products. Just putting the product of Facebook is hurting it. It lessens the amount of time you each episode/video needs to be and who sees the video. If you are looking to get an audience on there, then you will need to keep the videos short and sweet. Most of the video content on there is less than two minutes. There’s just nothing there for a variety show like the one on before it.
The best option for them is to flip the idea on its head and just make it social media based. Don’t have episodes but the cast creating engaging content on social media. Everyone these days are looking to become social media famous, so making a show that is all about it would make the show stand out more. Don’t copy the original format but rather one based on it. That’s the way to do it and make it right. This could also make for a wonder promotion for their parks. Have the mouseketeers make the viral videos around the park. This would get people to return to park and want to see them in-action and possibly be in the videos. Everyone one would want to be apart of that.
No cast has been announced yet for the “revival” but it’s going to be interesting to see how they do it.
