Single Review: ‘Crying in the Club’ by Camila Cabello

The first solo single from Fifth Harmony is here and boy, it’s a doozy. Camila Cabello teamed up with Sia, who helped write the song, to unleash her siren’s call into the clubs of the world. This would be an overly dramatic opening but the album is called “The Hurting. The Healing. The Loving.”

“Crying in the Club” is dance song that doesn’t sound like a dance song. The lyrics aren’t about that “club love.” The lyrics are heartbreak and how music helps Camila get over that. The arrangement of the song is well produced. Especially in the music video version of the song because it has a lead in verse before it’s the actual song. The lead in transitions perfectly into the song and it’s just something you don’t get to hear unless they are performing the song on tour.

The problem lately with the songs that Sia has had a hand in just sounds so much like her that you think you are listening to a new Sia song. While the song is good, it really doesn’t help the singer that is performing the song stand out. The artist needs to make the song their own but they seem to be just copying the way that Sia is performing the song for the demo they hear. It’s taking away the artist standing out and their success. If people go “I like this song from Camila! I’ll have to listen to what other stuff she puts out” and it’s not like the first song they heard, it will turn away the crowd that is not likely it because it’s not like what they originally heard.  While the opening portion of the music video sounds more like her than the actual song, no one is going to remember it because of it only last 1:44 out of a 5:20 music video.

The video isn’t bad unless flashing lights causes you to have seizures. If that is the case, then this video isn’t for you. It pretty much tells the story of a girl who got tired of crying alone so she pulled herself together enough to head to the club where the music soothes and heals her broken spirit. The premise is overdone but it works for her. It would have been nice to have more of a story that what is presented in the video. It’s just five minutes and 20 seconds of her dancing and looking sad and cute. Like what caused her to have so many questions in the intro? There just so much untouched potential that they could have done with this video.

The song isn’t a bad, actually, it’s really good. It just sounds too much like Sia. The video’s version of the song is amazing with that intro. The problem with the video is that the concept is overdone and something that helps sells the song but not tell the story.
