With the release of her new album “Melodrama” just around the corner, Lorde gave the world a new song today that is frankly the best song she has released so far off of “Melodrama.”
“Perfect Places” is a dance song that is a real banger. It’s pretty much a summer party song, which we seem to have like 50 of them. It’s really catchy song with a beat that will have jamming to do within the first couple of seconds of hearing it. It drops a pretty sick beat. I also enjoy how the song builds off of the beat and just lets it all go when it comes to the chorus. “Perfect Places” is arranged so well.
The lyrics are a little darker than what we heard in “Green Light.” They are mainly about the darker side of partying and comes off as a more personal song than what we have heard from Lorde so far. It really makes the song stand out even more just because it relatable. Everyone has experienced partying and this song captures when the feeling you get when you party as well as the dancers for it. I’m also pretty sure that “Perfect Places” is a metaphor for getting shit faced and just being overly happy. Lorde wrote a song about shitfaced. Everything is okay in the world.
The thing that doesn’t work for the song is the climax. There isn’t anything that makes it stand out from the rest of the song. Sure, there is a short change of lyrics asking “What the fuck are perfect places anyways?” It’s a noticeable change but it doesn’t help make the end really feel like the end. The climax just makes you feel unfulfilled. You want more out of it but yet, there isn’t anything more. It doesn’t have to be a big over the top finale stopper, just something that makes the song pop and make you go “that was awesome.”
“Perfect Places” is a dance song that really know how to build on the beat and make you want to jam. The lyrics are more relatable than Lorde’s past song but the song suffers from a climax that leaves you wanting more. Like I said, it doesn’t need to be over the top, just a little bit of mind-blowing.
