Show review: ‘Carpool Karaoke’

As many of us are aware, “The Late Late Show with James Corden” has a segment on his show where he enlist artist/celebrities with musical talents to help him drive to work in the carpool lane. This usually involves them singing their hits with James and other antics. It literally blows up the interwebs and kills thousands of internet spider’s homes every time. Well, because everyone has decided to make money on it, Apple Music decided to make a series of it. sigh.

“Carpool Karaoke” is pretty much a much longer version of the Late Late segment. The first episode featured Will Smith and James. Just from the first five minutes of it, I can already tell what the problem with the series is. The concept works really well for “The Late Late Show” because short, sweet, and to the point. Everything about it was worked because there wasn’t too much filler. The audience, whether clips or real, help make it more exciting.

This show just came off as boring and scripted. It felt like they were just stuck in a car today and told to make something happen. Sure, there was some entertaining portions of the show, but they are just scattered amongst what feels like a lot of filler. It’s “Carpool Karaoke,” not a talk show. A little conversation is fine but there was more talking than music in a show where it’s just karaoke.  It also didn’t help that the show started off with James and Will. Will Smith isn’t really known for his impressive music career. The songs he had were classic but it’s not like some of the other guests in the car. Personally, I wouldn’t have kicked off the series with this episode. While Will Smith has likable, it’s not enough to help make this shows interesting. There were previews for two other episodes that probably would have been a much better kick off for it.

I’m also not sure what’s going on with James Corden because it’s like he’s there but yet he’s not there. It’s fine if you just want to make a longer version of the segment but you need to commit to having him there. If he’s not going to be there all the time, then he really shouldn’t be on the show until down the line. Regardless, this is going to be an issue no matter if he’s on the show or not. His name is tied into the concept of the show and you’re going to be screwed either way.

While it seems like I’m just shitting on this show, there’s a lot of potential for this show. I think they need to make it something different from what we’ve already seen on “The Late Late Show.” They could make it into something that is better. They need to use their time better than what they had in the first one. They pretty much just need to be totally different from the “The Late Late Show” segment. Do that and the show will succeed.

I wouldn’t watch “Carpool Karaoke” right off the bat. The first episode wasn’t anything too spectacular. The show itself has potential to be something great but a lackluster artist, not a well-known music library, and just too much filler hurt it. It needs to be less like what we have known and more of its own thing. Not the great start to a new series.
