The day was October 29th, 2013. It was two days away from Halloween, but for many, it was scarier than what they would experience at the end of the month. For millions of girls across the world, they cried into their pillows as the Jonas Brothers broke up in order to “get their shit together.” Apparently, it took them six years and countless family dinners to “get their shit together.” After weeks of speculations, the Jonas Brother’s official Twitter announced that there would be a new single come into our lives at Midnight. They didn’t disappoint. AT ALL
You’re the medicine in the pain, the tattoo inside my brain
“Sucker” is an upbeat pop song. It continues the sound that the Jonas Brothers presented in their song “Poms Poms” and “The First Time.” The sound for this song is matured and more well rounded. The best way to describe it is that they took the DNCE sound, mashed it with Nick’s sexy lyrics from his solo career, and just added Kevin Jonas. When you listened to “Poms Poms” and “The First Time,” it just didn’t sound like them nor did it sound like something they wanted to put out.
The song’s lyrics are about their relationship and just being totally in love with the person you are with. This was obviously taken from real-life experience, with a call out to Nick’s recent marriage to Priyanka Chopra in the song lyrics. It’s mainly Nick and Joe on vocals but that’s to be expected as that was the case for most of their career. Kevin was only majorly on vocals during the first album “It’s About Time.” Honestly, I would have had like to have had all three brothers on vocals but that’s just me nitpicking.
The video itself is extremely adorable and rather iconic. It’s pretty much them and their significant others just having fun in a mansion. It has an Alice in Wonderland theme to it and frankly, I really liked it. I liked how they had their actual wives/girlfriend to play themselves and it just seemed like a fun time. It came across very well on the screen.
The only problem with “Sucker” is that it sounds too similar to the music that’s on the radio. Like I mentioned before, it sounds like a DNCE song. While there really isn’t too much they could do to not make it sound similar to what’s on the radio, it would have helped to try to make not sounds like that.
Let’s rate Nick Jonas
because why not
It’s Nick Jonas….he’s muscles are showing. 10 out of 10. Here’s a gif of him in a tub. You’re welcome.
“Sucker” is an excellent start to their comeback. The only thing really working against them is the fact that the song sounds like everything else on the radio. I don’t think it will get lost in the shuffle because of the hype but the similarity to DNCE, and other music similar, isn’t going to do it any favors. I still love the song though.
