Ready to feel old? Album ‘Oops!… I Did it Again’ turns 20 years old

On this day, May 16th, in the year 2000, Britney Spears gave the world the most iconic and probably influential albums in the decade in pop music – “Oops!… I Did It Again.” I talked about the first single of the same name back when it turned 20th in March. Like with that article, this isn’t going to be a review because I’d rate this album five stars, no questions asked. But slightly more a nostalgia trip because this album is a representation of my childhood.

“Oops!… I Did it Again” is a pop masterpiece like most of the second albums released by the big three, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and *NSYNC, at this time. You can fight me on the big three because we all know that Britney trumps Christina. The album after Backstreet Boys “Millennium” and *NSYNC’s “No String Attached” but that’s beside the point. The Swedish pop god Max Martin worked on the album as well as other well known Britney collaborators like Darkchild. He gave us “Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) and Britney’s slightly underrated cover of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Released at the peak of what would be my life long love for the queen, the legendary Ms. Britney Spears, this album was also the start of her peak years. This album was just a fun album. While there are some songs to pass over *cough*Dear Diary*cough*, a lot of the songs catchy pop songs, it’s just the perfect pop album, for that time. Top songs were obviously the singles (“Oops!,” “Stronger,” “Lucky, and “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know.”) as well as “Don’t Go Knockin’ On My Door, “What U See (Is What U Get),” and “Can’t Make You Love Me.” There’s also a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction) that isn’t bad but it’s kind there.

When most people think of Britney Spears’ early career, this is the album and the singles that they think of. Britney’s first album “Baby One More Time” brought her to the party and “Oops!… I Did It Again” was what made her a household name. I remember listening to this album on repeat to the point where my parents wanted to kill me figuratively. As I said, this album is representation of my childhood. I’m glad that this album is still considered a classic and fondly remembered. If you haven’t listened to this album, then I highly recommended taking a look. You won’t be disappointed until the end, “When Your Eyes Say It” and “Dear Diary” isn’t good. Just skip them like the rest of us.

‘Oops!… I Did It Again’ turns 20. Feel old yet?

1

On this day, 20 years ago, Britney Spears released the singles that were frankly ahead of its time. Literally and musically. The first single off of her second album, “Oop!… I Did It Again” would literally take her to new heights and just be iconic af. So, on this day of its anniversary, I thought it would be fitting to revisit this iconic bop as I feel old.

I’m not that innocent

“Oops!… I Did It Again” was released on March 27, 2000. Written by the pop god Max Martin (look him up, he’s a literally pop god), the single got Britney her third Grammy nomination. It was a top 10 hit in the US as well as took the album to the same name to be number one and was the highest debut-week album sales by a female artist until Adele broke that record in 2015.

Iconic outfit

The song is an upbeat pop song that speaks about someone that is a player and is just playing with her boyfriend/girlfriend’s heart. From the start of the song until the final note, it just the most 2000s pop song. The late 90s until the mid-2000s just had this sound with it. The music has this robotic/Europop feel to it. It’s honestly hard to explain it, but it’s just simply the best.

The vocals on the song were everything. The little things that she added to tune to make it just pop out. It wasn’t until the live raw vocals leaked. Sidenote: if you haven’t heard the live raw vocal from Britney Jean, then what are you doing with your life? Honestly, I would check them out because a lot of them are just so good.

What most people remember is the music video. The video takes place on Mars. Her astronaut lover uncovers the album cover, and then Britney and her massive stage rise through the ground. She then performs a show for the astronaut and mission control in a red latex jumpsuit. The most iconic part comes when the astronaut gives her the heart of the ocean, the same one from the 1997 movie “Titanic.” Random af but just everything. Realistically, it makes no sense, but it was 2000. The video creation was featured on MTV’s “Making the Video,” a show that showcased how a music video was made and then premiered it.

“Oops!… I Did It Again” is just merely iconic and is everything that pop music should be. From the actual song to the video itself, it’s what most people think about when it comes to the early 2000s music. It’s a song that everyone needs to listen to, especially if you are a fan of pop music.
